Our Date With DJ Nesh Last Night

Went over to RAW again to show some love for DJ Nesh’s set. I am always up for his stuff depending on where he spins of course. Ahem. He’s like one of the remaining species in KL Hip Hop DJs. Like how WordsManifest said to me, he knows how to tell a story with his mix. Word. Last night was super fun for me.

I was thinking last night. How we are not properly schooled with R&B and Hip Hop music over here in KL, to put it lightly. We are so hypnotized to the Top 40 stuff on TV and radio and it is what it is. I agree with Nesh with he said to me on the majority of people turn on their radio when they step into the car in the morning to go to work and that’s what they get and probably relate to. When will radio ever play a good Hip Hop track? Probably never. It doesn’t sell and why would radio wanna lose money like that? It’s all about the money and it’s sad, but that’s just how it goes. Announcements to promote and support local music is always there, but do you hear them as much as you hear Soulja Boy’s airplay? If they make the effort to play a good run of local stuff, which is aplenty out there, trust me, our boys would be doing big things. It’s support of the most important medium from TV and Radio that really works. Sure, magazines and blogs write about you, but it’s nothing compared to radio airplay and TV screenings which are on a totally different level altogether. It’s a tough spot especially for the Hip Hop acts, which is probably why so many people I know switched to other genres because they don’t get the thrill of it over here anymore.

It takes risks. Like how I did my KL Undercover. I know jack shit about organizing events. I know that I want to do it. Why did I do it? Because it’s what I want to experience on a night out. Music that I want to smile to. Music that I feel and love. Music that I wish they play in the clubs. I don’t profit from that event the other day, nothing. I got 2 Dawgs & A Ho to help me out and I am super appreciative on it. They understood my vision and it’s nothing more but the love of Hip Hop. Trust me when I say this, if there were people out there doing these underground hip hop nights, be it a club night or live gig, I won’t even be thinking of coming out with KL Undercover.

Is Hip Hop dead in KL? It’s perhaps on the verge, but I have hopes. The scene is so small and we look out for each other in ways that we are capable of. Blog coverage doesn’t count. That’s like a 2% of support, in my opinion. You may beg to differ. I prefer things physically happening, then I call it substantial support. It’s not an indie rock phenomenon and it ain’t even close. I can understand where all this is coming from and it is what it is, but I have faith in it. We can’t lose it, or we lose.

Whatever it is, support the scene as much as you can and stop being shy. Stop playing tracks on your iTunes at home and go see DJ Nesh on Wednesday night’s S.I.N. at RAW for a good live experience. Hehe. Oh yeah. This Friday at RAW is BASSLINE with Blastique featuring a surprise appearance by DJ Cliq! Check it and invite yourself on Facebook here.

So last night…

I Found My Favourite Graffiti Artist!

He’s Darbotz from Jakarta! Check out his website at http://thedarbotz.com/

I was just finishing my transcripts and I was on his website for the longest hour, admiring his work. He was probably the most interesting person I chat with the other day at Streething and he has the best graffiti work. It was so detailed and mind-blowing. And going through his website was just so magnetic and it puts me to shame X2000 as a graphic designer. I love his CUMI style, which is basically B&W characters with patterns and monsters. I love how detailed and how deep its substance was. He had Streething t-shirt designs that I missed out on and very upset with myself for not even looking at them.

Here’s what he did at Streething the other day.

Ok fine, I stole that from his flickr page. Check his stuff out too at Darbotz’s flickr. I support Darbotz!

VENUE : Palate Palette Restaurant & Bar, 21 Jalan Mesui, off Jalan Nagasari, 50200 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
DATE : 1st March 2008, Saturday.
TIME : 9pm - 3am.
ADMISSION : Free Entry.
LINE-UPS : TUBBY B2B CHI-PULP
AN-OWL B2B MAC B2B MH feat. DJ CLIQ & WORDS MANIFEST
KAIN (OHM RESISTANCE, USA)

DESCRIPTION :
Sick and tired of the current music scene, a small group of local DJ’s have decided to get together and form their own label to promote the music they love best. Resistiv3, specializes in hard/dark drum & bass, dubstep, downtempo and underground hip hop, by both local and international. But if you’re expecting a dnb remix of Beyonce’s songs and the likes of it at any of their gig, forget it. They want to leave all the ‘commercial stuff’ to other labels. Resistiv3 aims to stick to promoting underground sounds to the urbanites.

At their shows, expect sounds from international label like 315, Ascensions Recordings, Freak Recordings, Black Hoe Recordings, and Lifted Music. On the local side, there are Spacebar, FLOAT, The Rebel Scum, The Works, Nujita and many more.

Simply put, if you want to see a different side of music, keep on lookout for what resistiv3 has to offer. Or if you have been longing for a night out filled with beats from the future, a mishmash of dubstep and gangsta hip hop, or maybe jungle breaks with technoid/dark drum & bass, this tiny label might just be your savior.

Resistiv3’s inaugural show will be held on the 1st of March 2008 at Palate Palette, Kuala Lumpur. This free performance starts at 9p.m., featuring acts like Kain (of Ohm Resistance), Mac, Anowl, MH, DJ Cliq, Wordsmanifest, Chi-Pulp and Tubby. Visuals will be provided by Perez Old Skool.

For more, information on the label and their activities, log on to www.myspace.com/resistiv3 or e-mail resistiv3@gmail.com to get your name on their mailing list.

Mac (resistiv3, The Works)
Began his foray into drum ‘n’ bass/breakbeat live mixing at the age of 17, and he hasn’t looked back since. One of the most vigourous giggers in the Malaysian urban music scene, Mac has performed throughout the region, having had massive responses from audiences in Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. But Kuala Lumpur remains his stomping ground, and it is with no exaggeration that Mac is known all over as the Klang Valley’s most prolific and most approachable drum ‘n’ bass DJ.

An-Owl (resistiv3)
Being influenced DJ Mac and inspired by Loops Collective, An-Owl started DJing in 2003. From then, he has spinned in major drum n bass private parties in the same year. With his sharp mixing in various musical flavors from liquid to jungle/jump up/techy, his versatility is undeniable, being equally comfortable playing vinyl by using Traktor DJ Studio. Within a year, An Owl has been discovered and offered as resident DJ under Loops Collective label. Followed by his appearance in INFERNO, Looking Good, DNB Xtra and Liquid Jump Up. He has gained himself the most commemorative DJ set in London Elektricity (UK) South East Asia tour in year 2004, Utah Jazz (UK) & Nu:tone (UK) in 2005, Knowledge Mag (UK) launch in 2006 and DJ SUV (UK) in 2007.

MH (resistiv3)
Inspired from a wide veriety of dj’s and producers such as Evol intent, TEKDBZ, TitanZERO & Diesel Boy, MH covering several music genre’s such as Dubsteps, Underground Rap, Hard & Darksteps of Drum & Bass whenever he’s spreading the music in the club. Being thought and learned from his own old friends, An-Owl & Mac, since he was 16 years old, Now his art of mixing is more proper and creative. He did several warm up sets around KL such as DJ SUV (UK) in January 2006, turn out to be a real pump up to all of the junglist in Espanda, Kuala Lumpur.

Later after a few month, he was performing alongside DJ Sith & DJ Dizzid From Jiving Tribe (dance music label) base in Koh Pha Ngan, Thailand in Muse Bar, Kuala Lumpur plus other event nights such as Liquid Jump-Up, Looking Good & Bongo Bootleg. In December 2007, collaborate with Mac & Anowl, he was performing for the Extended DNB Album Launching at Sangria, Kuala Lumpur.

With a mission for saving the underground movements in his own home base, he decided to spread some rare quality music genre whenever he’s on the decks. Aspect some underground future beats that will sets the elements right inside your body, mind & souls.

DJ Cliq (The Works , The Rebel Scum)
he does not let his youth get the better of him, displaying as he does a maturity of thought in his body of work and his musical direction. By age 17 he was already collaborating with KL d’n'b heavyweights Spacebar Collective at Elevation Genting, and has worked extensively with the Loops Collective and Beatmonkey, as well as showcasing his turntablism skills for numerous hip hop events. Due to his impressive progressions in scratch DJing, in 2005 Cliq was recruited by local underground hip-hop crew The Rebel Scum, and his musical career looks set to take itself to more exciting plateaus.

Words Manifest (The Works, The Rebel Scum)
He has been involved in hip-hop emceeing since 1998, first with underground street legends The Sicksiderz, then moving on to co-found the Teh Tarik Crew, and finally setting up current independent favourites The Rebel Scum, of which he is still a member. Apart from the hip-hop community, WordsManifest has also contributed his distinct lyricism to the Spacebar Collective and hard-rock outfit Dakooty Roaches. Words moonlights as a freelance photographer, graphic designer, copywriter and videographer.

Yesterday was…

all-in-the-family-poster-la.jpg

It was my first Streething event and it was pretty cool actually. The whole street thing was awesome < pun intended. Was there from 5.30pm onwards until about 10pm-ish. Was super tired and hungry, so I left after Dave White’s live painting which was awesome.

Good job Choo Ee and the rest of the peeps. I have no time to go into details, but I am sure there will be plenty of reviews in magazines and websites, so Google them up! I offer you photos and videos.
