I asked a question in Facebook, and it was, “If you are allowed to only listen to one album in your entire lifetime, what album would that be?” Ethan replied recently with this album, Madonna’s Bedtime Stories because it’s sex, sex, sex. I totally agreed and got me into listening to this album again now, also making it one of the best albums ever recorded, in my opinion.
Let’s step back in time, just a little.

Honestly speaking, I am not Madonna’s biggest fan, but she has scored some great moments with me, like this Bedtime Stories album for instance. I remember my friend lend me this cassette to listen to in school and was absolutely in love with it. Madonna was doing Dallas Austin, Nellee Hooper, Babyface and Björk? Now, that’s impressive. I was also big fans of the songwriters and producers at that time, so it was a big plus point.

The album photography were shot by Patrick Demarchelier in 1994. It was her post-Erotica, Marilyn Monroe era. It worked, knowing how revolutionary she was. They were such tease, and classy at the same time. Thick blue eye shadow were prominent with this R&B Madonna era.

‘Bedtime Story’ was co-written by Björk and it is my favourite on the album, with it’s haunting sound when combined with the talented Nellee Hooper. It’s probably my favourite Madonna track ever. She created a historical music moment when she performed the Junior Vasquez remix of that single at the Brit Awards 1995 with a very long blonde weave and Versace dress, looking like Lady Godiva, with 2 male dancers behind her. It was oh so artistic and amazing. Check out the video here.
Other standout tracks in the album is the cheeky ‘Human Nature’ that had her saying, “Did I say something wrong? Oops, I didn’t know I couldn’t talk about sex”. There’s also that sexy ‘Inside Of Me’ that screams sex sex sex. Even Me’Shell NdegeOcello made appearance on ‘I’d Rather Be Your Love’.
The single that took off for this album was the beautiful Babyface-written and produced track, ‘Take A Bow’ which hit the charts all over the world. It became a love anthem of all love-themed compilation albums.

It’s amazing how everything gels so well in this production, it’s almost flawless. For me, this is one of the amazing non-skip album, where you are able to listen to every single track, every second, without hitting the ‘Next’ button. Critics were worried with this R&B move, but musically speaking, it worked for her, but it was overlooked on how classy this album is.
Basically it is sensual, sexy Madonna, without looking sexed up.

1994/1995 are my favourite Madonna moments with this Bedtime Stories album. It’s going down in history as one of my best albums ever. I wanna present an award to her with this effort, damn it.
“Let’s get unconscious honey.”
